The White Stripes — St Ides Of March
August 22nd at 3:06 PM

Yeap you got right. But I think is better if tune your guitar in open E so you can "slide" the chorus chords. That would me it sound more blues stylish.

Playing it in normal key I found another way to play de riff so you can optionally use de E chord. This way:

e|-------------------------------------------------- --------
B|-------------(0)--(0)-(0)-(0)-(0)-(0)-(0)------- ----------
G|-2b4-2-0-----(1)---2---1---2---1---2---1------ ------------
D|---------2----2---(2)-(2)-(2)-(2)-(2)-(2)--- --------------
A|-----------4-(2)--(2)-(2)-(2)-(2)-(2)-(2)- -------------…

Elliott Smith — Between The Bars

Elliott had once said something to the effect that when he wrote, he wanted to convey a feeling. The "meanings" of his songs were not meant to be set in stone, but instead interpreted by the listener in a variety of ways. Personally, I feel the song reflects his own personality and problems. Maybe the alcohol is singing to him...

by the way I can't ignore the tab submitters comment "Madeleine Peyroux does a better than Smith's..." true the cover is excellent, but anyone who believes that it is better probably isn't a huge ES fan. Just a thought.

Am I the only one who can't get his fingers in the correct position to perform that cord?

A statement on guitar tabs, intellectual property, and fair use.

As artists and musicians, we take seriously the issue of intellectual property and fair use. This is an educational community, and all content posted here is generated by our users for the education of others. We do not condone or accept any work copied out of existing printed resources.

The act of tabbing a song is a valuable educational tool, which is utilized by private music instructors all over the world. We believe that the person making a tab learns as much if not more than the people they share their tabs with. If a user were to copy from an existing printed source, they would be robbing themselves of a valuable educational experience, and harming the artists who rightfully deserve compensation for their work licensed to music publishers.

However, when a musician releases recorded music it becomes a part of the global community of musicians, open to reinterpretation response. It is completely fair and valid for a budding musician to listen to music and play along with a song, essentially stepping into the shoes of the artists they long to emulate. If they figure out what a part is and why it works with the song, it is equally valid to share that newfound knowledge with other budding musicians.
