"I get completely haunted," he says. In his most vivid dream, Johnson is standing on the beach with a guitar, gazing into the shore break. "Our stage crew was there, the band were all set up, it was a normal show, but the ocean was where the crowd should be," Johnson recalls. "I was thinking, 'What's going on here?' " Johnson and his band played on as the tide crept up. "We were knee-deep, then waist-deep, and still playing. I had a feeling like, 'When do we stop?'

"You've got to listen to your dreams," says Johnson, sitting at a picnic table in the quiet, grassy back yard of his home in Santa Barbara, California. He's wearing his usual outfit — board shorts, a T-shirt and flip-flops — and talking in a relaxed surfer's lilt. "That's when I know I've got to take a break, kick...

It's Presidents day, two weeks before the Texas primary, and Adam Ukman has come to the small city of San Marcos to train precinct captains for Barack Obama. A soft-spoken native of Houston, Ukman has served on the campaign's front lines in Iowa and Utah, organizing grass-roots supporters to secure decisive victories in both states. This evening, more than eighty residents of San Marcos have crammed into a yellow clapboard recreation center on a street dotted with shacks that date from the Jim Crow era. "Our job is not to run in here to tell you how it's going to be," Ukman tells them. "This is your campaign. Not our campaign."

COLUMBIA, S.C. - When Hootie and the Blowfish play at a fundraiser to benefit the Animal Mission this week, the bandmates likely will compare notes on their recent solo efforts.

Guitarist Mark Bryan and lead singer Darius Rucker are working on their second solo efforts, while drummer Jim "Soni" Sonefeld is making his solo debut. Bassist Dean Felber doesn't have any solo plans yet.

Bryan's effort includes a punkish track "Glad to be Alive" that didn't make the cut for the most recent Hootie effort — 2005's "Looking for Lucky."

"I can totally respect it's not a Hootie song," Bryan said. His "End of the Front" has a diverse lineup from punk to pop, rock to bluegrass.

"Stylistically it's all over the place," Bryan told The (Columbia) State. "But it's because the songs were written over a 10-year period."

Rucker, who released his first solo effort "Back to Then" in 2002, is going a little bit country for his second effort.

"I know that a lot of country fans have 'Cracked Rear View,' " Rucker said of the band's breakthrough album, which has sold more than 16 million copies and put the Columbia-based group on the map. "We've never really been that far from country. It came out so organically."

For his debut, drummer Sonefeld went more progressive with his "Snowman Melting" being released by independent label Aquarian Nation.

"It just feels so alive," Sonefeld said. "It's killing me not to have it ready yet."

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, the two male members of pop quartet ABBA, have settled a long-running legal dispute with a Swedish playwright over credits for a musical that was once Broadway-bound.

In a joint statement on Monday, Andersson, Ulvaeus and playwright Carl-Johan Seth said they would end a legal wrangle over who received credit as author of the musical "Kristina from Duvemala," a story about a 19th-century poor Swedish family.

The musical debuted in Swedish city Malmo in 1995, but before it was due to open in Stockholm a few years later the three began to fight over who received credit for the story.

LOS ANGELES - Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry is putting down his ax while he goes under the knife.

Perry canceled a solo show scheduled for April 5 in Niagara Falls, N.Y., so he can recover from knee surgery, spokeswoman Marcee Rondan said in a statement released Monday.

Rondan said Perry has needed knee surgery for two years but put off the procedure so he wouldn't miss any Aerosmith tour dates.

The 57-year-old's knee finally gave out early this month after a pair of performances with his two sons. That prompted his doctor to schedule the surgery for March 18.

LOS ANGELES - Britney Spears' attorney says the pop star has already spent $1 million on legal fees in her child-custody case and objects to paying a half-million dollars to Kevin Federline's lawyers.

Attorney Stacy Phillips told a Los Angeles court commissioner Monday that Federline's lawyers are only entitled to about $150,000 to $175,000.

She also says Spears' ex-husband can pay his lawyers on his own.

Federline attorney Mark Vincent Kaplan says the case is unusually complicated and all the billing is legitimate.

Commissioner Scott Gordon had not yet ruled on the matter Monday as the hearing continued behind closed doors.

Cocoa Tea records reggae song for Obama (AP)

2 hours, 7 minutes ago

KINGSTON, Jamaica - Barack Obama has won what could be an influential endorsement among reggae fans: Jamaican singer Cocoa Tea, who's backing the Illinois senator in a new tune.

"This is not about class nor color, race nor creed," the veteran dancehall crooner sings in a version posted on the video Web site Dailymotion. "It's about the changes, what the Americans need."

The song goes on to call Obama a "trendsetter" and urge Americans "to unite as one" behind him.

Cocoa Tea, whose real name is Calvin Scott, said Sunday that the tribute song "Barack Obama" will be released this week by New York's VP Records.

"The young people who are supporting him want change — and that's what he represents," said the singer, whose laid-back lyrical style made him a local star in the 1980s.

He becomes the second major Caribbean musician to endorse Obama in song, joining Trinidadian calypso star Mighty Sparrow who recently recorded a track titled "Barack the Magnificent."

LOS ANGELES (AP) — First-season "American Idol" finalist Nikki McKibbin says she was upfront with "Idol" producers about her stripping past seven years ago.

McKibbin, who came in third during the first season of the Fox singing competition, says she stripped for "five or six months" in Fort Worth, Texas. When asked on an "Idol" application if she had any professional dance experience, McKibbin says she wrote: "Yes — exotic."

Current finalist David Hernandez made headlines last week when it was revealed he steadily worked as a stripper for three years, dancing nude for the "mostly male" clientele at Dick's Cabaret in Phoenix.

McKibbin's advice to Hernandez: Have "no regrets" about his past.

"He did what he did for a reason, whether he loved what he was doing or he needed the money," said McKibbin.

The now-married mother of two is rebutting a report that she had a suicidal breakdown on Feb. 21 over her mother's death last August. McKibbin said the incident has been "blown out of proportion."

"I broke my foot and had a bad reaction to pain medication," McKibbin told The Associated Press on Monday.

McKibbin insists she was never suicidal.

Game Over Jail Time (E! Online)

2008-03-10 13:00:11.736875

Josh Grossberg Mon Mar 10, 7:55 AM ET

Los Angeles (E! Online) - The Game is back in play.

The "How We Do" hip-hopster has been released from a Los Angeles County jail after serving just eight days of a 60-day sentence for pulling a pistol during a schoolyard pickup basketball game.

Game, whose real name is Jayceon Taylor, was released from the Twin Towers Correctional Facility at 11:44 p.m. Sunday, according to the LA County Sheriff's Department, which typically spings well-behaved inmates (including those of the celebrity persuasion) early, due to overcrowded jails.

The tattooed rapper reported to the joint on Mar. 3 to begin serving his time.

He pleaded no contest last month to a felony count of possession of a firearm in a school zone.  In exchange for his plea, prosecutors dropped two other charges—making criminal threats and exhibiting a firearm in the presence of a peace officer.

In addition to the jail term, Game was placed on three years' probation and ordered to perform 150 hours of community service. Had he not accepted the plea agreement and been found guilty of all charges in a trial, the emcee could've faced up to five years in prison.

A former high-school hoops star, the rapper got into the mess while playing b-ball on Feb. 24, 2007 at the Rita Walters Educational Learning Complex near his old Compton stomping grounds.

According to the police report, Game got into a fight with a member of the opposing team and then retrieved a gun from his Cadillac Escalade and threatened to kill the man.

Game's attorney, Shawn Chapman Holley, was unavailable for comment.

The 28-year-old performer's third and possibly final album, L.A.X., is expected to drop in June.

Juanes preaches peace on tour in US (AP)

2008-03-10 09:00:13.099376

By SIGAL RATNER-ARIAS, Associated Press Writer 1 hour, 38 minutes ago

NEW YORK - Juanes kicked off the U.S. leg of his world tour at Madison Square Garden, bringing a message of peace and a giddy enthusiasm to be performing in "the temple of music."

He opened Thursday night with his hit "A Dios le pido," and kept the public on its feet with more than 20 songs, including "Mala gente," "Fotografia," "Volverte a ver" and the megahit "La camisa negra."

The Colombia star showed his activist colors, preaching peace between his homeland and its neighbors amid a diplomatic crisis over a deadly Colombian cross-border raid into Ecuador last week that killed a senior Colombian rebel and 24 others.

"This night as a Colombian, I want to extend my right hand and embrace all my Ecuadorean brothers, I want to extend my left hand and embrace all my Venezuelan brothers," Juanes said. "Only we can come together under a single flag, the flag of peace."

A hush fell over the stadium as Juanes led a tribute to land-mine victims, singing "Minas piedras" while two giant screens carried images of the victims of anti-personnel mines by photojournalist Gervasio Sanchez.

Leading a band of seven, guitar in hand, Juanes briefly lost his way while singing "Mentira" — but the crowd was forgiving.

"I forgot the lyrics and it's my turn to improvise," Juanes confessed to wave of applause.

For an encore, Juanes played a rousing rendition of Colombian Joe Arroyo's "La rebelion."

Juanes is planning a free concert at the Colombian-Venezuela border to foster peaceful resolution of the crisis embroiling both nations and Ecuador, his public relations firm said Friday.

The concert is to take place at the border between the Colombian city of Cucuta and the Venezuelan city of San Antonio de Tachira within the next three weeks, firm Rogers & Cowan announced in a statement released in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, where the presidents of Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador met Friday to try to resolve their differences.

Juanes will ask musicians from Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador and other Latin American nations to join with concertgoers "in demanding that the region's governments find a diplomatic solution to ease the growing military presence along area borders," the firm said.

The rocker has previously performed as part of the Nobel Peace Prize awards ceremony and to raise awareness and money for an anti-landmine foundation in Colombia.

It will take place between the Colombian city of Cucuta and the Venezuelan city of San Antonio de Tachira within the next three weeks, public relations firm Rogers & Cowan announced.

Tensions in the Andean region have been high since March 1, when Colombian troops killed about two dozen guerrillas including a top rebel leader in Ecuadorean territory.

Juanes, 35, will ask musicians from Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador and other Latin American nations to join with concertgoers "in demanding that the region's governments find a diplomatic solution to ease the growing military presence along area borders."

The winner of a dozen Latin Grammys, Juanes began a tour last week, promoting his new album "La Vida Es Un Ratico" ("Life Is a Moment").

Julio Iglesias Jr. drops country single (AP)

2008-03-10 21:00:13.231835

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The winner of Country Music Television's "Gone Country" reality show was born in Madrid, Spain, and raised in Miami, but these days Julio Iglesias Jr. is spending a lot of time in Nashville.

Iglesias, the son of the well-known Spanish singer Julio Iglesias, lived with six other contestants — R&B singers Bobby Brown and Sisqo, Twister Sister's Dee Snider, "American Idol" finalist Diana DeGarmo, Carnie Wilson of Wilson Phillips fame and "The Brady Bunch" star Maureen McCormick — as they competed for a record deal.

The series, taped over 10 days in October at country star Barbara Mandrell's former home, concluded Friday on CMT with Iglesias proclaimed the winner.

"The whole experience was amazing, especially trying to lasso horses and clean out horse stalls at Gretchen Wilson's house," Iglesias said of the show, which was hosted by John Rich of the duo Big & Rich.

His debut country single, "The Way I Want You," is produced by Rich and expected to begin airing this week. Iglesias co-wrote the tune with Tammy Hyler and James Slater.

"I'm not sure where all of this will take me, but I really hope country radio likes this single as much as we enjoyed writing and recording it," he said.

Iglesias, 35, has recorded two albums during his career, one in English and one in Spanish. He's also worked as a model and an actor and hosted a series on The Travel Channel.

"The thing I saw in Julio was passion," Rich said. "Here's a guy who's had an incredibly diverse career in the public eye, but everything always comes back to music for him — it's who he is."

Iglesias says he will continue writing with some of Nashville's top songwriters and will appear at upcoming country music events.

Lisa Marie Not Suing? Fat Chance (E! Online)

2008-03-10 13:00:12.171695

Gina Serpe Mon Mar 10, 7:52 AM ET

Los Angeles (E! Online) - Britain's Daily Mail wasn't just chewing the fat with its commentary last week about Lisa Marie Presley's seeming weight gain. It was, according to the singer, engaging in libelous behavior.

Elvis' progeny, who disclosed "under the gun" on Thursday that she was pregnant, has announced plans to sue the tabloid over the article for alleging she had an "unhealthy appetite" and was "growing like her dad."

According to Presley's U.K. lawyer Simon Smith, the allegations left the singer "deeply upset and offended...especially as it was widely published just as she and her family were meant to be celebrating her happy news."

Per Smith, the rapid online dissemination of the Mail's story forced the 40-year-old to publicly announce her pregnancy. As a result, she plans on suing in London High Court against the tabloid's publishers, Associated Newspapers.

Because the action has yet to be filed, exactly which headline pushed Presley over the litigious edge is unclear. A wholly unflattering comparison between the singer and her late father, in the latter part of his career, appeared in the tabloid back in December.

Titled "Looking Just Like Dad (Or Why Elvis' Girl Must Return to Slender)," the article featured photos of both Presleys and criticized the King for having "piled on the pounds"—also listing a rundown of the some of his most infamous and calorie-laden favorite snacks. The item said her  weight is "one inheritance for which Lisa Marie Presley might not thank her illustrious father."

Last week, the tab featured photos mocking the younger Presley's weight gain. Though those photos weren't made available online, several gossip sites picked up on the theme.

In response, in a posting labeled "Confirmation Under the Gun," the younger Presley announced that "after being the target all week of slanderous and degrading stories, horribly manipulated pictures and articles in the media, I have had to show my cards and announce under the gun and under vicious personal attack that I am in fact pregnant."

"Starting with a London publication and then New York and Chicago all writing false defamatory degrading stories about all of the dark possible reasons I could be putting on weight."

The baby will be the first child for Presley and her rocker hubby Michael Lockwood. She has two children, 18-year-old daughter Riley and 15-year-old son Sam, with former spouse Danny Keough.

LONDON - Lisa Marie Presley has sued a British newspaper for alleging that she was piling on the pounds because of her unhealthy appetite, her lawyer said Monday.

Presley, who is pregnant, alleges in a suit filed at London's High Court on Friday that the story in Britain's Daily Mail was slanderous and degrading. The newspaper has since reported on the 40-year-old singer's pregnancy.

"Once they got a glimpse of my expanding physique a few days ago, they have been like a pack of coyotes circling their prey whilst eerily howling with delight," she said on her blog.

The daughter of the late singer Elvis Presley claims the pictures taken at a Hollywood restaurant last week forced her to go public about the baby she is having with her fourth husband, music producer Michael Lockwood.

"It really upset her," Presley's attorney Jo Paton told The Associated Press. "She was about to announce her pregnancy and was shocked and hurt by the unkind article about her appearance."

Paton said Presley was seeking an apology and damages.

The Daily Mail said the first indication they had of Presley's complaint was when they were served with court documents.

"We are investigating the matter," the newspaper said in a statement.

The child will be Presley's third.

She has an 18-year-old daughter and 15-year-old son from her first marriage to musician Danny Keough, which ended in 1994. She was briefly married to Michael Jackson and to actor Nicholas Cage.

She married Lockwood in January 2006.

Madonna speaks out on Justin collaboration (Yahoo! Music)

courtesy of NME.com Sun Mar 9, 5:00 PM ET

Madonna has given details about her highly-anticipated collaboration with Justin Timberlake.

The singer, who on Monday will be inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, says she and Timberlake would discuss issues and problems with people in order to write their songs, which will appear on her forthcoming album Hard Candy.

"I really enjoy writing with Justin," she tells Interview magazine "We had psychoanalytic sessions whenever we wrote songs first. We'd sit down and we'd start talking about situations. And then we'd start talking about issues or problems or relationships with people. That was the only way, because you know, writing together with somebody is very intimate....that was fun, because he's open and he's got talent. He's a songwriter. I haven't worked with a lot of songwriters where I'm instantly connected and start riffing and playing with the rhythm of the words. He's as interested in the rhythm of the words as the meaning of the words."

The superstar also reveals that her son David "wouldn’t have lived" if she hadn’t adopted him and that her daughter Lourdes spent several weeks working in orphanages in Malawi with newborn babies.

"She so came into her own and was so responsible and stayed for eight hours every day and worked tirelessly. I thought, 'Why am I babying her so much? She's capable of so much more.' We don't let kids do anything. We think, 'Oh, they're kids--they can't take care of other kids; they can't do this; they can't do that.' And after you go to Africa, you drop all that silliness."

Madonna will be inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame on Monday, March 10. Justin Timberlake will present her with the honor during the ceremony at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City.

Madonna, Mellencamp head to rock hall (AP)

2008-03-10 23:00:11.179173

By DAVID BAUDER, AP Entertainment Writer 3 minutes ago

NEW YORK - Madonna, pop music's quick-change artist, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Monday and paid tribute to people who encouraged her and even critics who panned her for helping drive her career.

Heartland hitmaker John Mellencamp, Philly soul producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, literate songwriter Leonard Cohen, British rockers the Dave Clark Five and surf instrumentalists the Ventures were among the other inductees.

Madonna recalled a teacher who encouraged her to follow her dreams when she was only 14.

"Thirty-five years later, people are still encouraging me to believe in my dreams," she said at the Waldorf Astoria induction ceremony. "What more could I ask for?"

Even the people who "said I was talentless, that I was chubby, that I couldn't sing, that I was a one-hit wonder, they helped me, too," she said. "They inspired me because they made me question myself repeatedly and pushed me to be better."

Singer Justin Timberlake, who helped produce Madonna's upcoming album, inducted her with an innuendo-laden speech.

"The world is full of Madonna wanna-bes. I might have even dated a couple," said Britney Spears' ex. "But there is truly only one Madonna."

Timberlake told of how he felt ill one day while working on Madonna's new album and she asked whether he wanted a B-12 shot. He said sure, expecting a doctor, to show up, but Madonna pulled out a syringe and said, "drop 'em."

After he pulled his pants back up, "she looked at me and said, `that's top shelf," and that was one of the greatest days of my life," he said.

"Everything he said is basically true," Madonna confirmed, "but I didn't say `drop 'em,' I said, `pull your pants down."

Madonna didn't perform, but asked punk rockers Iggy Pop and the Stooges to sing "Burning Up" and "Ray of Light."

At the end, a shirtless Pop said, "you make me feel shiny and new, like a virgin touched for the very first time," and tossed his microphone of the floor.

Presley: Not happy to announce pregnancy (AP)

2008-03-10 12:00:10.996827

Mon Mar 10, 7:39 AM ET

NEW YORK - Lisa Marie Presley wanted to keep her pregnancy private, but felt she had to say something when photos of her looking heavier were ridiculed in the news media.

"After being the target all week of slanderous and degrading stories, horribly manipulated pictures and articles in the media, I have had to show my cards and announce under the gun and under vicious personal attack that I am in fact pregnant," the 40-year-old singer wrote on her MySpace page.

Presley and her husband, music producer Michael Lockwood, are expecting a baby next fall, her spokeswoman, Cindy Guagenti, said Friday. It will be the third child for Presley, who has two children from her marriage to ex-husband Danny Keough.

The announcement comes several days after photos of Presley — daughter of Elvis Presley and actress Priscilla — eating lunch in Los Angeles made the media rounds, with the London newspaper The Daily Mail asking: "Like father like daughter? Bloated Lisa Marie is now the double of dad Elvis."

Guagenti told The Associated Press: "I mean, if you read some of the stories it's like, `she's gonna die like her father,' `her and her mom are in a fight because of her weight' — that's not true at all. It's just awful stuff."

Presley, who was once married to Michael Jackson and Nicolas Cage too, said she was "seething" over speculation on her weight gain.

"You KNOW if you were pregnant and you felt you were expanding uncontrollably by the moment as a result, and the worldwide media started badgering and harassing you for it, plastering you everywhere in an unflattering light, you would be mortified as well," she said.

Rapper Remy Ma goes on trial in NY for shooting woman (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. rapper Remy Ma, furious after a wad of cash disappeared from her purse at a party, shot a woman, fled the scene and then tried to intimidate witnesses, prosecutors told a Manhattan jury on Monday.

The Grammy-nominated rapper, whose real name is Remy Smith, is charged with assault, witness intimidation and related charges for shooting Makeda Barnes-Joseph after discovering that $3,000 was missing from her purse.

She faces a maximum sentence of 25 years behind bars.

NEW YORK - Remy Ma went on trial for assault Monday, with a prosecutor claiming the rapper shot and almost killed a friend because she thought the woman had stolen money from her.

But a lawyer for the singer, whose real name is Remy Smith, said the July 14 shooting after a party was "a tragic accident."

Smith, 26, is charged in Manhattan's state Supreme Court with first-degree assault and related charges in the shooting of Makeda Barnes Joseph, who was critically wounded.

Prosecutor Jason Berland said Smith, who accused Joseph of taking $2,000 from her purse, fired two .45-caliber slugs into Joseph's abdomen, then fled in a Cadillac Escalade and slammed into a parked car a few blocks away.

According to the prosecution, Smith abandoned her SUV and went to a friend's house without ever calling police or for medical help.

Defense lawyer Ivan Fisher said the victim's story about the shooting had changed since she testified before a grand jury. He said the two women had struggled over the gun and it went off accidentally. Fisher said Joseph's story changed when her lawyer was preparing to file a $20 million lawsuit against the rapper. The lawsuit has since been withdrawn.

Smith, who was nominated for a Grammy as part of the Terror Squad for the 2004 smash "Lean Back," has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is free on $250,000 bail. The rapper, who also has appeared on recordings with Busta Rhymes and Eminem, could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted.

Spears' lawyer fights K-Fed's legal fees (AP)

2008-03-10 18:00:12.979497

By LINDA DEUTSCH, AP Special Correspondent 26 minutes ago

LOS ANGELES - Britney Spears' new lawyer has a tip for Kevin Federline: If you're going to ask for your legal bills to be paid, don't leave a $2,000 tip for the waiter on a $365 check.

Attorney Stacy Phillips, who recently took over Spears' case, told a court Monday that the pop star has already spent more than $1 million on her child-custody case and objects to paying nearly a half-million dollars in legal fees for her ex-husband, who has enough money to have recently left the exorbitant gratuity.

Phillips had asked for the hearing to challenge a move by Federline's lead lawyer, Mark Vincent Kaplan, to have Spears pay his legal bills. Commissioner Scott Gordon did not rule during the hearing, part of which was held behind closed doors. Superior Court spokesman Allan Parachini said the decision may be made Tuesday.

Federline has sole custody of his two little boys by Spears, who is under the conservatorship of her father, James, following bizarre behavior and two hospitalizations. Federline and James Spears chatted amiably at court.

During the hearing, Phillips said that Federline's lawyers have billed excessively and are entitled to only about $150,00 to $175,000.

Phillips also said Federline has the money to pay his lawyers himself, citing excessive personal spending by him. She said he recently had a $365 check at a restaurant and gave the waiter a $2,000 tip.

"God bless!" Phillips said. "If he's willing to tip someone that much for serving him, he should be willing to pay his legal fees."

Kaplan argued that the $600-an-hour fees charged by him and partner James Simon were for legitimate work in an extraordinary case.

"If the court views this as a simple custody case, I'm in trouble," Kaplan told Gordon.

Kaplan pointed out there were numerous hearings involving Spears' behavior, which created emergencies involving the safety of her children.

"When you have a case with monitored visitation, that is not a regular case," he said.

He insisted that it requires the complete attention of himself and his partner.
