"Our stage crew was there, the band were all set up, it was a normal show, but the ocean was where the crowd should be," Johnson recalls. "I was thinking, 'What's going on here?' " Johnson and his band played on as the tide crept up. "We were knee-deep, then waist-deep, and still playing. I had a feeling like, 'When do we stop?'
"You've got to listen to your dreams," says Johnson, sitting at a picnic table in the quiet, grassy back yard of his home in Santa Barbara, California. He's wearing his usual outfit — board shorts, a T-shirt and flip-flops — and talking in a relaxed surfer's lilt. "That's when I know I've got to take a break, kick...

It's Presidents day, two weeks before the Texas primary, and Adam Ukman has come to the small city of San Marcos to train precinct captains for Barack Obama. A soft-spoken native of Houston, Ukman has served on the campaign's front lines in Iowa and Utah, organizing grass-roots supporters to secure decisive victories in both states. This evening, more than eighty residents of San Marcos have crammed into a yellow clapboard recreation center on a street dotted with shacks that date from the Jim Crow era. "Our job is not to run in here to tell you how it's going to be," Ukman tells them. "This is your campaign. Not our campaign."

'American Idol' axes first finalist (AP)

NEW YORK - A juicy backstory wasn't enough to keep David Hernandez on "American Idol." The 24-year-old ex-stripper from Glendale, Ariz., was dismissed Wednesday, leaving 11 aspiring singers to vie for the "Idol" title and a record contract."Honestly, things happen for a reason," Hernandez said before leaving the stage. "I think we all have a plan. ... This isn't it for me."
Hernandez, who sang the Beatles' "I Saw Her Standing There," made headlines last week after it was revealed to The Associated Press that he worked as a stripper at a Phoenix club with a "mostly male" clientele.
Kristy Lee Cook, a 24-year-old from Selma, Ore., and Syesha Mercado, a 21-year-old from Sarasota, Fla., rounded out the bottom three vote-getters.
Finalists had the opportunity to perform classics from the John Lennon-Paul McCartney songbook this week. The show's producers recently got permission to use songs belonging to Sony/ATV Music Publishing, a company formed by Sony and Michael Jackson.
The standouts were Carly Smithson ("Come Together"), Brooke White ("Let It Be"), David Cook ("Eleanor Rigby") and Chikezie ("She's A Woman").
David Archuleta, whose cover of Lennon's "Imagine" drew heaps of praise two weeks ago, showed that he's merely mortal when he flubbed the lyrics to "We Can Work It Out." That didn't fly with Cowell, who called the 17-year-old's performance "a mess."
Wednesday's show also featured a performance by season-five finalist Katharine McPhee and musician David Foster (on the piano).

Britney Drawn to Perfection (E! Online)

Los Angeles (E! Online) - Britney Spears has gone two-dimensional.Although she's supposedly busy whipping herself into camera-ready shape for an upcoming video, the 26-year-old pop tart has opted to skip a step and order up an animated version of her sleek self instead.
Photos released Tuesday by Jive Records depict Spears in anime superhero mode, replete with long blond tresses and an angular jaw. In two of the shots, the singer is suited up in different futuristic, body-hugging outfits.
Another is a hazy close-up of cartoon-Spears' face, while a fourth is a shot of a skyscraper with the word "Victory" printed vertically on its side, flanked by what looks like the moon.
Jive would not comment on where the pictures came from, but Britain's Sun tabloid is reporting that they're stills from Spears' video for the upcoming single "Break the Ice," off of 2007's Blackout, and that the "Toxic" chanteuse came up with the idea.
Fans of the singer can catch the animated version of Spears for themselves when the video debuts Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. PST on the Website blackoutball.com. The site was specially designed to serve as a virtual black tie premiere party for the "Break the Ice" segment.
As far as her fans previously knew, Spears has been logging numerous hours in a North Hollywood dance studio rehearsing routines for her "Hot as Ice" video, having enlisted a couple of top L.A.-area choreographers to help her bust a move, not to mention bust out of her slump.
While Blackout has sold over 2 million copies worldwide, Spears' attempt to recreate the "Gimme More" magic onstage at the MTV Video Music Awards did not go over well, with critics slamming every aspect of her performance, from her outfit to her attitude.
Friends of Spears have said that she is finally serious about a comeback, now that the drama surrounding her physical and mental health, her parents, her driving record and her children has somewhat settled down.

NEW YORK - Britney Spears' upcoming appearance on the CBS show "How I Met Your Mother" could be to borrow scene-stealer Barney's favorite word legendary.Spears will guest star in a March 24 episode of the cult series, CBS spokeswoman Kelli Raftery told The Associated Press on Tuesday. The pop star will portray a receptionist in a dermatologist's office named Abby who becomes "smitten" with Ted (Josh Radnor), Raftery said.
Craig Thomas, the show's creator, told Usmagazine.com that Spears attended a table reading with the cast on Monday, and that her scenes will probably be filmed later this week. He said representatives for Spears approached the CBS about "Mother" because "she was looking for a small part on a funny show."
Spears has previous TV sitcom experience playing a character on a 2006 episode of "Will and Grace." She was also the host and musical guest on "Saturday Night Live" in 2000.
"How I Met Your Mother," returning Monday with all-new episodes following the writers strike, co-stars Radnor, Jason Segal, Alyson Hannigan, Cobie Smulders and Neil Patrick Harris as twentysomethings living in New York City. Harris portrays serial bachelor Barney Stinson, who frequently uses the word "legendary" to describe his various exploits.
Spears has been under the conservatorship of her father, James, following bizarre behavior and two hospitalizations. She is also locked in a custody battle with ex-husband Kevin Federline over the former couple's sons, Jayden James, 1, and Sean Preston, 2.

Juanes, the Grammy-winning Colombian rocker, said the "Peace Without Borders" concert scheduled for Sunday is an effort to ease tensions caused by a Colombian raid into Ecuador to kill a top rebel leader on March 1. Wed Mar 12, 6:56 AM ET
LOS ANGELES - Reality TV figure Jonny Fairplay will have to provide a court with more details about his tooth-busting dust-up with Danny Bonaduce before his lawsuit against producers of an awards show can go forward. "I think more facts should be set forth," Superior Court Judge Michael C. Solner ruled Tuesday.Solner gave Fairplay, whose real name is Jon Dalton, 20 days to amend his complaint to explain why the producers of Fox Reality Channel's "Really Awards" were negligent and involved in the alleged battery.
The lawsuit stems from an October 2007 altercation in which Fairplay, a competitor on "Survivor: Pearl Islands," jumped into Bonaduce's arms on stage during the awards show to give him a hug.
Bonaduce, 48, responded by tossing Fairplay over his shoulders. Fairplay landed face first, losing one tooth, breaking another and loosening two more.
Fairplay, 34, sued Bonaduce, Fox Reality Channel and the show producers for battery, negligence and emotional distress. He claims the producers encouraged Bonaduce to go on stage uninvited, did not provide security and failed to provide prompt medical care afterward.
Vicki Greco, a lawyer for Fox and the producers Natural 9 Entertainment, said Bonaduce's actions were unplanned and the companies were not responsible for the incident.
Fairplay's lawyer, Daniel C. Lapidus, claimed Bonaduce told the producers "what he wanted to do and they told him to do it."
Bonaduce, a child actor on "The Partridge Family," starred in the 2005 reality show "Breaking Bonaduce."
The next hearing in the case is scheduled for May 12.

Little 'Idol,' big voice: Malubay, baby (AP)

By DAMIAN GRASS, Associated Press Writer 1 hour, 7 minutes ago
MIRAMAR, Fla. - When Ramiele Malubay takes the stage on "American Idol," the 20-year-old with punkish blond streaks in her dark hair comes off as bubbly, polished and even a little edgy. That's not exactly the young woman her friends and family say was too shy to sing "Happy Birthday" a few months ago. When her parents tried to get her to sing a karaoke version at high school friend Arthur "A.J." Ke's birthday bash, the 20-year-old Malubay just hid in the corner and rolled her eyes.
"Since it was a really cheap karaoke machine, a bunch of the words were spelled wrong," Ke said. "But once she was up there, we were all cracking up, and we all ended up having a great time."
And if it wasn't for her father's prodding, the diminutive Filipino-American singer with the big voice probably wouldn't have auditioned a second time for "American Idol" which means she wouldn't be standing among the final 12 contestants on the top-rated Fox TV show. She was rejected in the initial stage last year and balked at going back.
"I think she was lacking a bit of that confidence and didn't want the people close to her expect too much from her," neighbor Isidra Yokose said Tuesday night at the lobby of Hilton Garden Inn in Miramar, where family and friends have been meeting every week to watch the show, cheer for Malubay and furiously text in votes on their cell phones, of course.
"She is so incredibly special to us and to the rest of the Filipino community," added family friend Geny Panaligan-Ke, who organizes the "Watch 'N Vote 4 Ramiele" gatherings.
"I don't know where she gets it, but she definitely has the talent, the potential and the confidence to make it," Yokose said. "We are so proud of her, and we have all the faith in the world that she will make it big."
Before her good looks, tiny stature she's 4-foot-11 and big voice made her a fan favorite, Malubay worked part-time as a waitress at a sushi restaurant in suburban Fort Lauderdale, where she grew up with her younger sister and her Filipino parents. The family moved to the United States from Saudi Arabia when she was 5.
She's aware of the comparisons to fellow Filipino Jasmine Trias, who finished third in the show's third season. But she wants to top that.
"First Filipino 'American Idol,' that's kind of still a surreal reach," Malubay said in an early "Idol" interview. "I don't want to be ahead of myself. I don't want it to go fast. I want it to just come as it does. I'm really excited to just get onstage and show everybody what I can do."
Malubay pronounced "mah-loo-BYE" also became the focus of a minor "Idol" scandal this season when Facebook photos of her goofing off with friends in provocative poses were made public. She doesn't understand the fuss.
"It's not a big deal," she wrote on a MySpace blog. "For me, those photos are not racy. But if you think they are, it's OK, that's your opinion. ... It has nothing to do with the show, which is looking for the next singing superstar and not looking for the perfect human."

Return to Forever returns to tour (AP)

NEW YORK - Chick Corea will tour for the first time in 25 years with Return to Forever, one of the pioneering jazz-rock fusion bands that melded daring improvisations with hard-driving rhythmic grooves. The quartet reuniting the keyboardist with guitarist Al Di Meola, bassist Stanley Clarke and drummer Lenny White announced Wednesday that they will return for more than 50 dates in the U.S., Canada, and Europe, kicking off the much-anticipated tour on May 29 in Austin, Texas. and ending in New York on Aug. 7. The tour includes performances at major summer jazz festivals in Montreal; Montreux, Switzerland; San Sebastian, Spain; Nice, France; and Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
"We never stopped talking about it ... but in the past couple of years we started talking more seriously about `hey when can we set some time down to actually get together and play.'" said Corea. "There were also a lot of requests from fans. One thing that became apparent as the decades flipped along was that people remembered the group which was kind of surprising and also heartening. ...
"The band had a kind of presentation and impact that reached a lot of people jazz fans, rock fans, young people," he said. "The audience seemed to widen when we played this music. We're going to see what happens this time."
This particular RTF lineup influenced future generations of musicians with their mix of cutting-edge electronic technology led by Corea's synthesizer experiments, fiery rock and funk beats fueled by White's drums, instrumental virtuosity exemplified by Di Meola's guitar licks, and a blend of acoustic and electronic sounds created by bassist Clarke and other quartet members.
RTF founding members Corea and Clarke, who remained with the band from its launch in 1972 to its break-up in 1977, are also producing a double-CD anthology to coincide with the tour with remixed and remastered tracks from the band's classic albums from 1973-76: "Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy," "Where Have I Known You Before," the Grammy-winning "No Mystery" and "Romantic Warrior."
"We agreed that the first time out we're going to mostly play the original repertoire from the '70s ... but everybody's got very fresh ideas about how to approach the music," said Corea, who got together with his bandmates last month in Los Angeles for their first rehearsal since a 1983 reunion tour. "Everybody's sound and approach is so much improved."

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - George Strait says he still gets a thrill hearing his songs on the radio, and now he'll have a whole channel of his music to get excited about."Strait Country" will launch April 1 on XM Radio channel 17 to coincide with the release of the country star's 37th album, "Troubadour," the satellite radio company announced Wednesday.
The station will run through May 31 and feature songs from Strait's catalog as well as exclusive interviews and programming about the star.
He joins Led Zeppelin and Michael Jackson as the only recording artists to have their own XM Radio channels.
